If you’re a fan of the foxtrot, a sultan of swing, a whiz at a waltz or a member of a ballroom dancing club then you’ll be interested in the resurgence of social dancing which is due to take place at Mallow GAA Club on Easter Sunday (April 24th) from 3 to 6pm.
Adults of all ages are invited to enjoy The Brídhaven Tea Dance. The 2nd of April was a very special day for all at Brídhaven Nursing Home in Mallow when they celebrated the 100th birthday of a beloved resident, Deborah Scully. Deborah, from Killavullen (near Mallow) celebrated her special birthday surrounded by family, friends and fellow residents and staff from the Home. Four generations of the Scully family attended, including her three sons Dave, Donal and Denis, daughter-in-law Betsy, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Deborah received a framed congratulatory letter from the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, and the traditional ‘centenarian bounty’ - a cheque given to all Irish citizens who reach 100 years of age. Presented by the Parish Priest of Killavullen, Fr. Gould, Deborah cut the specially baked cake and was overjoyed to be the centre of attention on this special day. With party food, a sing song with melodies from her youth (played by Gene Harrington) she was misty eyed but happy to remember and be remembered. When asked how she felt on turning 100 she joked: "I am 100 today, I suppose I will live for another 100 years"....

A day full of Irish. Here in Bridhaven Nursing Home we had a day full of fun and excitement for St. Patrick's Day. First thing in the morning we had great competition in our Irish/St. Patrick's themed quizzes and crosswords. We all wore the badges that our residents helped make, in arts and crafts, with pride. For dinner we had a traditional meal of bacon and cabbage. In the afternoon there was music and a great sing-a-long. There was a great atmosphere throughout the Home all day from residents, staff and visitors alike. Many thanks to Jean Harrington for his wonderful singing and guitar playing and we look forward to his next visit...

Saturday the 5th of March will be a day full of theatrical colour for one Mallow Nursing Home as they welcome The Butterfly Theatre Company to perform their production of “Siamsa”- a celebration of Irish song and dance. Butterfly Theatre Company is a touring group who bring a range of shows on a seasonal basis to residential villages and nursing homes across Ireland. The show, performed by a cast of three, will be staged complete with backdrop, sound, music and flamboyant costume in Brídhaven itself, saving the need for the elderly residents to leave the comfort of their Home.
Butterfly Theatre Director Emma Joyce has performed in over 200 residential villages and nursing homes within the U.K but originally hails from Cork and looks forward to bringing the experience and joy of the theatre back home. “Our mission is to provide first class entertainment that tours to each venue fully equiped to give a truly memorable experience. We love audience participation from both staff and residents, and are looking forward to interacting with our audience in Brídhaven”.

Valentine’s Day is a reminder to tell the people we love how much we care. With this sentiment in mind February 14th is set to be a day full of celebration for those in the care of Brídhaven Nursing Home in Mallow. Residents will be treated to a day full of romantically themed activities to show them just how cherished they are. The morning will feature a “Love” themed quiz testing people’s knowledge of famous couples and romantic trivia.
After a lovely lunch the serenade begins with musician David Todd playing some romantic old favourites. David regularly plays at Brídhaven and has developed a fond rapport with the residents. The Valentine’s theme will be further evident in the decór with handmade decorations made by the residents in the arts and crafts sessions decorating the sitting rooms through the Home. All the ladies will be presented with roses and the gentlemen with chocolate kisses. To round off the festivities a King and Queen will be selected from amongst the residents and as their first “royal” duty they will cut the Valentine’s Day cake made by the ever talented Brídhaven catering staff.
Brídhaven Nursing home is a labour of love for husband and wife Paul & Maryclare Rochford who have owned it since 2004. The Rochfords and their dedicated team of staff take pride in running in a friendly, professional, home from home environment.

As is often said “life is for living”!
At Brídhaven Nursing Home in Mallow town there’s never a dull moment. Spring is in the air and it’s time to get going, get out and about and ‘just do it!’. Recognising that varied social activities are an essential part of living a good life, the Home has organised a series of events and activities to address the diversity of the people in their care and make life interesting for the residents. ‘There’s no point in having a needlework session when people are more interested in knitting, or a planting session when all they want to do is exercises on the lawn’ said Trish O’Sullivan, one of the Activities Co-Ordinators at Brídhaven.
A group of residents will visit Mallow Library’s Photo Exhibition next Tuesday and the upcoming trip to Fota House & Gardens is eagerly awaited. Musical interludes are always welcome, especially from local musician David Todd, and dancing displays by the Castle Set Dancers, poetry readings and art exhibitions by local students, are all part of the plan for Spring. Regular activities include Monday morning arts and crafts sessions, coffee mornings, computer classes, spa mornings, classic movies on Sunday afternoons, birthday parties and weekly Mass.
